About Coastal Métis Beadworks

Tanshi/Hello, Uy skweyul/Good day,
My name is Rochelle Fairbanks and I come from a long line of talented, strong, and resilient Métis people. My ancestors on my maternal grandmothers side are from the Red River Settlement in Manitoba. They slowly made their way to the west back in the early 1900’s. I was born in Port Alberni on the Westcoast of British Columbia on sunny Vancouver Island. I now reside in Parksville. My family and I are grateful to live, work, and play on the sacred land of the the Qualicum and Snaw-naw-as First Nations.

Five years ago I discovered my gift of traditional Métis beadwork. For centuries, the Métis people have utilized both history and artistry to decorate many different fabrics and jewelry with colorful beads . Metis floral beadwork has turned into a recognizable and distinctive style that can be seen all over the globe.

With Coastal Métis Beadworks, I hope to carry on this tradition. Through my current works, I want to capture the intricacy and beauty of these traditional pieces in a modern and wearable style. My aim is to create something for everyone, no matter their style preferences. Whether they prefer bright and bold or understated elegance, I believe they can find something meaningful within this rich history.
